Southgate purchased the old Iowa City Elks Club building in 1983. Originally built in 1913, the building had fallen into disrepair. Southgate’s renovation plan was to create unique, functional office space without losing any of the building’s original beauty and character. The project was completed in 1985 and resulted in a 21,000 square foot mulit-tenant office building. almost doubling the existing space by adding an extra floor, and utilizing basement and atttic area. The project team turned the unique challenges presented in this renovation into opportunities.
